Registering their third straight win, Sanfrecee opened a three-point lead over Sydney as they look well set for a place in the knockout stage. Sanfrecce suffered an early setback when defender Hayato Araki had to be stretchered off after a heavy fall in the eighth minute, with head A moment of brilliance in the 20th minute saw Sanfrecce take the lead, Naoto Arai’s cross from the right was volleyed straight into goal by Higashi Shunki, giving Sydney custodian Andrew Redmayne no chance. The Australian side had several opportunities to draw level before the break, with the best one coming in added time when Osako pushed Douglas Costa’s cross onto the path of Rhyan Grant but the Sydney captain only managed to knock his attempt against the post.
Skibbe took off forward Goncalo Pacienca and sent on Pieros Sotiriou in the second half and it proved to be a masterstroke. Tolgay Arslan dispossessed Hayden Matthews at the edge of Sydney’s box in the 55th minute and crossed for Sotiriou to finish with aplomb to double Sanfrecce’s advantage. Sydney tried all they could to muster a fightback and managed to pull one back through substitute Adrian Segecic, who swept home a Max Burgess cutback in the 90th minute Sanfrecce and Sydney will do battle again on November 7 where another win for the Japanese side could see them clinch a spot in the knockout stage with two matches to spare.
