A wild and wonderful game in Tallaght with a combination of majestic moments and mishaps delivering a dramatic end to a week packed with storylines. At another time, the focus would be solely on Shamrock Rovers, and the questions raised by conceding five goals in the space of two home matches – following on from Monday’s defeat to Waterford - to take just one point from a week where they’d reasonably have expected to collect six. But St Patrick’s Athletic should be sharing the spotlight, with a goal from 16-year-old Mason Melia enough to earn a point for interim boss Sean O’Connor, a man who once made headlines for an offensive gesture to Saints fans while wearing Rovers colours in this derby. He sent out a team here with an offensive outlook in a better sense of the word, and they responded from a shaky opening to come from behind twice and go home with a result.
Shamrock Rovers: Pohls, Cleary, Lopes, Honohan; Farrugia, Poom, Noonan (Byrne 61), Kavanagh (Burns 61; Clarke 90); Nugent, Greene; Kenny (Burke 75).
St Patrick’s Athletic: Rogers, Turner, Redmond, Keeley, Breslin; Lennon, Bolger; Kavanagh (Leavy 73), Forrester; Keating (Mulraney 61), Melia (Nolan 89).
Merci!
