A-League 2023 2024 The Original Rivalry Melbourne Victory Adelaide United

Red against Blue. When it comes to combustible match-ups in the A-League, few have the same intensity and drama as the Original Rivalry. Whether it’s culture, politics or sport, Victoria and South Australia have long shared a strong dislike for each other… the two states seem to thrive on it. So when the A-League started it was only natural that there would be some sporting animosity between Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United. And what’s unfolded on the pitch since the start of the Hyundai A-League in 2005/06 has only strengthened the rivalry between the clubs.

Melbourne Victory have climbed to the top of the Isuzu UTE A-League standings after earning a 2-0 win over old foes Adelaide United in the Original Rivalry. Zinedine Machach broke the deadlock with 17 minutes remaining in Saturday night’s blockbuster clash at AAMI Park. Bound for next month’s AFC Asian Cup in Qatar with the Socceroos and in his last game before the tournament, Bruno Fornaroli then sealed the points with his 13th goal of the season in the final minute of regulation to preserve Victory’s unbeaten season through 10 rounds.

The only undefeated team remaining, Victory leapfrogged Wellington Phoenix atop the standings on goal difference heading into the New Year, while seventh-placed Adelaide slumped to a third defeat in four games. Both teams were greeted to a great atmosphere at AAMI Park, where the Northern Terrace were in full voice, while Adelaide fans travelled in strong numbers for the Original Rivalry.
