Mamelodi Sundowns kicked off their Caf Champions League group phase campaign in style following Sunday's 3-0 victory over 10-man FC Nouadhibou. Lucas Costa Ribeiro thrust the Brazilians ahead after 22 minutes by finishing off a Thapelo Morena pass. Peter Shalulile doubled Masandawana's advantage six minutes later when he headed in a Marcelo Allende corner kick as the hosts totally seized control of the game. The visitors were then reduced to 10 men when goalkeeper Babacar Diop was sent for an early shower following a foul on substitute Gaston Sirino on the edge of the box in the 70th minute. Sirino then stepped up to score from the resultant freekick and put the contest beyond Nouadhibou's reach. Thapelo Morena put in a good shift for someone who was coming from a long injury layoff. He was unlucky not to find the back of the net on an afternoon he had his second-half goal ruled to have been scored from an offside position. He also supplied Ribeiro with an assist for the first goal of the match.

The Brazilians were the biggest winners of Sunday's clash as they started their Champions League group campaign on an encouraging note. It was their first match after lifting the African Football League title exactly two weeks ago and they sent out a statement that they will be unstoppable be in Africa this season. Sundowns' win is bad news for fellow Group A contestants TP Mazembe who lost 1-0 to Pyramids on Friday evening. The five-time African champions would not want the Brazilians to take an early lead as they would be difficult to remove from the top of the table. After spending over a month focusing on continental duties in the African Football League and Champions League, Sundowns will finally be back for domestic responsibilities on Wednesday. They face SuperSport United in a Premier Soccer League match at Lucas Moripe Stadium after playing seven consecutive games in Africa. The Brazilians have won eight straight league games and would want to continue with their winning ways in this Tshwane Derby. After the SuperSport match, Sundowns then travel to Lubumbashi to face TP Mazembe in their second Group A game.
