Often finding themselves just a step off, a pass wide, or a shot too high, the Portland Thorns fell 2-0 to the San Diego Wave at Providence Park on Saturday night. With the loss adding to an inconsistent few weeks since the World Cup break the Thorns slip to second in the NWSL standings and could fall even lower by the end of the weekend. The Wave (10-7-3, 33 points) ascend to the top spot in the table with two matches remaining in the regular season.
If ever there was a match the Thorns needed the game-breaking individual brilliance of reigning MVP Sophia Smith, Saturday’s was it. But Portland’s talisman up top missed her third consecutive match as she mends an MCL sprain sustained Aug. 27.
