Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And where Sophia Smith goes, goals follow. On a hazy Sunday night at Providence Park, the Portland Thorns beat the North Carolina Courage 2-1 to regain top positioning in the NWSL standings. Smith’s goal less than 10 seconds into her shift as a substitute was the difference in a dramatic, high-level affair. The Thorns (8-4-4, 28 points) are in first place with six matches to go — four of them against teams currently in the NWSL playoff picture. The Courage (8-6-2, 26 points) sit in second in a tight table.
