Borussia Dortmund have made a winning start to the 2016/17 season after Thomas Tuchel's team secured a 2-1 (1-0) victory at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored both goals (17, 89) in front of 81,360 spectators at a sold-out, firstly from a header following a wonderful cross from André Schürrle and secondly from the spot late on. The Gabon international has now scored six times in four games on the first day of the season. Mutu (90+2) did pull one back for Mainz but it was nothing more than late consolation for the visitors.
Borussia Dortmund started their first match of the 2016/17 season with the same ten outfield players that began Monday's 3-0 win over Eintracht Trier. The only change came in goal, where Bürki replaced Weidenfeller. Absentees against Mainz included Reus, Götze (lack of match fitness), Durm (knee operation), Subotic (chest operation), Bender und Ginter (rested after Olympic duty).Mainz travelled without Curci (calf), Jairo (medial collateral ligament), Latza (adductors), Zimling and Berggreen (both cruciate ligament). Schmidt made four changes to the team that beat SpVgg Unterhaching 4-2 in a penalty shootout, introducing Malli, Clemens, Gbamin and Onisiwo to the starting XI.
