And on Wednesday afternoon came perhaps their strongest statement to date of their intention to compete for silverware in the club’s inaugural Liberty A-League campaign. Faced with yet another daunting task in their top of the table clash with Sydney FC, United were not phased, hitting the reigning premiers with a one-two punch courtesy of Hannah Keane before half-time which proved to be enough at the full-time whistle. Western were resolute defensively and equally potent heading the other way, not allowing the Sky Blues to get a choke-hold on the game and hitting them with force on the break.

United’s latest win continues an unprecedented start to their existence which no one foresaw before the start of the season – in fact, most pundits had them sitting in the bottom half of the table in their pre-season predictions. This is a team with a strong backbone, forged in NPLW Victoria – where many of these players played together at Calder United – along with wily veterans, and experienced heads from here and abroad including Women’s World Cup winner Jess McDonald and Matildas midfielder Chloe Logarzo (who has missed the last two games).

And then there are the diamonds in the rough like Keane, who has taken the league by storm and surged to the top of the Golden Boot standings. Now, after seven games, Mark Torcaso’s side has beaten all four semi-finalists from last season and after today, they sit top of the Liberty A-League table and their Championship credentials are well and truly  legit. “Western United smiling again. Another clean sheet and another win. Seven in a row,” commentator Teo Pellizzeri said on the full-time whistle.  That’s the golden question on everyone’s lips heading into another round of action. Next up, United travel north to take on Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday afternoon – who are fresh off their first win in almost a year after an emotional 2-0 win over Melbourne City. Is eight wins in a row on the cards after a short turnaround? All eyes will be on Wanderers Football Park this weekend
