SuperSport United moved into second spot on the DStv Premiership log after they defeated Marumo Gallants 1-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.Matsatsantsa leapfrogged Richards Bay (who will be in action on Saturday) to sit seven points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns thanks to Onismor Bhasera’s goal early in the second half, while Bahlabane ba Ntwa find themselves in 13th and just two points above the relegation zone.United offered up the first threat on goal, with Thamsanqa Gabuza glancing on Patrick Maswanganyi’s free kick delivery in the eighth minute, but Gallants goalkeeper Washington Arubi made a fine save. The visiting team suffered an early injury blow when defender Ismael Toure succumbed to a hip issue and was replaced by Ayanda Nkili on 20 minutes.

Both teams struggled to find any kind of passing rhythm, though SuperSport created a chance out of Thamsanqa Gabuza’s determination on 36 minutes, with the striker doggedly holding off two defenders before getting away a shot on the turn, but Arubi made a comfortable save. The first half closed with the teams locked at 0-0, while the second stanza opened with Matsatsantsa swapping out centre-back Thulani Hlatshwayo for Luke Fleurs – the former had suffered a nasty blow to the head in a collision before the interval.Four minutes after the restart the hosts created a fine opportunity after powerful running from Grant Margeman, but Maswanganyi put a left-footed volley wide of the mark with the ‘keeper having been drawn off his line.United finally found the back of the net on 56 minutes, with Margeman providing a fine cross into the danger area from the right flank, allowing left-back Onismor Bhasera to attack the ball and power home a header for 1-0.Gallants responded well to going behind and began to assert some attacking pressure for the first time in the match, and they were close to an equaliser with just under a quarter hour of regulation time remaining when substitute Ranga Chivaviro sent an acrobatic volley just off target.Chivaviro had another agile strike on goal in the 90th minute – this one on target – but United goalkeeper Ricardo Goss made an excellent save to see his side secure all three points. The teams will be back in DStv Premiership action on Tuesday 3 January, with SuperSport away to Cape Town City and Gallants visiting Sekhukhune United.
