Chiefs made only one change from their penalty shoot-out win over Stellenbosch in the MTN8, as Yusuf Maart returned from suspension at the expense of Keagan Dolly while new signings Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana and Edmilson Dove were named on the bench. Arthur Zwane's charges were lively with a high press in the opening exchanges and were awarded a penalty on 21 minutes after a handball by Mbongeni Gumede in the box from a cross by Kgaogelo Sekgota.
However, Dillan Solomons could not capitalise for Amakhosi as he dragged his spot-kick just wide of the bottom corner. Chiefs continued to create chances as Siyethemba Sithebe ballooned a strike over the crossbar after going through on goal and Khama Billiat was denied by goalkeeper Veli Mothwa, also through on goal.

The game continued to open up in latter phase of the first stanza but it took Usuthu until just before the half-time break to have a shot on target after Gabadinho Mhango's low shot in the box was crucial blocked by Njabulo Ngcobo. The second stanza got off to a quick start as George Matlou had a good opportunity ten minutes in after controlling a chip by Billiat in the box away from Mothwa and clear on goal but his touch was heavy and could not convert into an open goal. However, AmaZulu sat too deep as the game progressed, with Chiefs looking for openings and Zwane eventually made a change 20 minutes before time as Bimenyimana got his debut in place Ashley Du Preez. With the game needing a spark, Amakhosi brought on Dolly and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and immediately started threatening once again. Kgaogelo Sekgota almost snatched the winner for Chiefs four minutes before time with a cracking strike from range that flashed narrowly wide and the sides shared the spoils.
