Pirates made four changes after a loss against Maritzburg United, as they were bolstered by the return of Tapelo Xoki, Deon Hotto and Kabelo Dlamini, alongside a recall for Zakhele Lepasa while Galaxy handed Bernard Parker his first start. Jose Riveiro's charges had a bright start to the encounter as they got the opening goal inside six minutes after Spiwe Msimango deflected Lepasa's shot into his own net after a through ball by Dlamini. The game opened up after that, as the Rockets looked to get back into the game but the Buccaneers had another chance on the half-hour mark after Lepasa's back-heel crashed the face of shot-stopper Melusi Buthelez. The hosts found spaces in the pockets going forward and Lepasa doubled their lead with eight minutes left of the first stanza after his attempted chip over the defence swerved over Melusi, who missed the flight of the ball.

Pirates absorbed the pressure in the early skirmishes of the second stanza, as they looked to play on transitions but Galaxy lacked the finesse to break them down. Riveiro's men gained courage to put the game beyond doubt after the hour-mark as Bandile Shandu latched onto a cross by Innocent Maela but he fired his volley over the crossbar, unmarked at the back post. As both set of players looked tired, with the tempo of the game slowing down, the Spanish mentor introduced fresh legs 23 minutes before time as Olisa Ndah replaced Xoki and Ben Motshwari took the place of Thabang Monare, who picked up an injury. The Soweto giants were comfortable in the closing stages, as they passed the ball around without much resistance from the Rockets to see out the victory.
