Kaizer Chiefs failed to match Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates' winning start to the new season when they went down 1-0 to Royal AM at the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday evening. Although Amakhosi showed industry and did create some chances, they could have lost by more had the KwaZulu-Natal side been more clinical. The new season had promised much but it could not have started worse for Arthur Zwane's side as Chiefs found themselves 1-0 down in the first minute.
The goal was scored by Ricardo Nascimento, who squeezed the ball into the bottom corner after Andre de Jong's initial effort had been cleared off the line by Siyethemba Sithebe, following Amakhosi's failure to clear a corner. The Glamour Boys had to work hard to get back into the game and nearly equalised in the 23rd minute when Royal AM keeper Hugo Nyame spilled Ashley du Preez's shot, the ball falling to Khama Billiat, but the Zimbabwean had his first-time effort cleared off the line. Four minutes later Du Preez had the opportunity to score on debut after being played through by fellow debutant Yusuf Maart, but his parting shot was too close to Nyame.
The Durban side then squandered two great chances in quick succession to double the lead. The first saw De Jong lacking the power to beat Bruce Bvuma, before Mxolisi Macuphu missed a sitter right in front of goal after a cutback from Tebogo Pontsane 10 minutes before the break. The action continued, at the other end, but the scoreline remained unchanged as Du Preez fired over from range and then Billiat had a shot well saved by Nyame. After a tightly contested opening 15 minutes of the second stanza, the hosts had a good chance on the hour mark when De Jong cut in from the left and fired a shot just over the bar. The energetic Sithebe drew a comfortable save from Nyama moments later with a volley from a tight angle, before Royal AM and Nascimento were denied a second by Bvuma, who did brilliantly to turn away the Brazilian's volley with 20 minutes to go. Amakhosi were able to build up some steam as the game went into the final five minutes and Keagan Dolly drew a stinging save from Nyame with powerful free kick in the 88th minute. That however was the last real chance
