Inter fully deserved to progress after Ajax failed to show the same phenomenal goalscoring form they have enjoyed in their last five matches, and were ultimately out-played by the Serie A side. That said, for all the Italian's early pressure, they could not find a way through a stubborn Dutch defence, marshalled competently by young duo Hedwiges Maduro and Thomas Vermaelen.
The breakthrough looked to be near just before the half hour mark when the Swedish referee decided to award a penalty to the home side for a non-deliberate hand ball in the box by Ajax captain Olaf Lindenbergh, but it was not to be Adriano's night. The San Siro crowd - finally allowed back into the stadium after a lengthy ban - fell silent as the Brazilian striker sent goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg the wrong way, only to drag his spot kick wide of the post.

Fortunately for Inter, and the player himself, the miss was not to prove costly, as Stankovic knocked the wind out of Ajax's sails after the break with a stunning individual effort.
Midfielder Walter Samuel picked up the ball and fed Stankovic on the left wing, who then cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable right footed curler just inside the far corner. The goal was the Serbian international's second of the tie, and effectively sealed the win for Inter.
Ajax did their best to get back into the game after conceding, but the task proved too much for the Dutch outfit, who will now have to focus on picking up their domestic form if they are to qualify for next year's Champions League. The result completed the quarter-final line-up, which also sees Benfica facing Barcelona, Arsenal against Juventus, and Olympique Lyon versus AC Milan.
