Usuthu made two changes to the side that beat ES Setif in the CAF Champions League, as Thembela Sikhakhane returned alongside a rare start for Tshepang Moremi while Stellies were bolstered by the return of Ashley Du Preez, Stanley Dimgba and Marc Van Heerden. Benni McCarthy's charges were taking the game to Stellenbosch in the opening exchanges and Matarr Ceesay had a chance to give them the lead in the 20th minute after he was setup by Moremi to have a strike on goal on the edge of the box but his effort sailed slightly over the crossbar. The visitors were playing on counter-attacks and Du Preez eventually broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark with a low finish from close range after a mix-up in the box. Stellies' lead was short-lived, as Cessay levelled matters for AmaZulu five minutes later with a side-footed strike in the six-yard box after a deflected cut-back by Siphelele Mthembu.

Steve Barker's men were finding gaps in the last third on quick transitions early in the second stanza and Dimgba found the back of the net ten minutes in but his goal was disallowed for offside. However, Juan Ortiz eventually restored the lead for the Western Cape side on the hour-mark with a precise side-footed shot that found the bottom corner after he was left unmarked in the box. The game opened up as Usuthu were spirited to get back into the game and in the last 14 minutes Barker made a tactical change, as Granwald Scott replaced Dimgba and in the same moment, McCarthy introduced Bonginkosi Ntuli in place of Mthembu for fresh legs upfront. Usuthu eventually found the equaliser just after that after Sikhakhane bundled home a shot from close range in a scramble in the six-yard box. The game was there for the taking in the dying minutes but neither side could carve out clear chances as they settled for the share of the spoils, as Stellies remain in fifth place, just a point behind third-placed Chiefs while AmaZulu moved up to sixth.
