Amakhosi found a lot joy down the flanks in the opening 10 minutes as Philani Zulu and Ramahlwe Mphahlele were providing width and crosses, but they could not find their targets inside the box. Ryan Moon almost opened the scoring for Steve Komphela’s charges in the 12th minute with a header following a cross from Siphiwe Tshabalala, but his effort sailed over the corner of the crossbar. It was the Buccaneers who broke the deadlock in the 21st minute as Thembinkosi Lorch skipped past two Chiefs defenders before firing into the bottom corner. Leonardo Castro replied for the Glamour Boys eight minutes later with a brilliant header inside the area following a pin-point free-kick from Tshabalala. Bernard Morrison should have restored the lead for Milutin Sredojevic’s men seven minutes before time after having time to bring down a cross inside the box, but he fired straight at goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune under pressure.

The tempo showed no signs of slowing down in the closing stages of the first half, but the score remained 1-1 as the sides headed into the break. Sredojevic’s troops were ahead again less than 30 seconds into the second half substitute as Luvuyo Memela, with his first two touches of the game, fired past Khune after some good work by Musa Nyatama. Castro nearly got the second goal for Amakhosi in the 54th minute with a header at the near post, but Siyabonga Mpontshane made a save to deny the Colombian. Justin Shonga was unlucky not to have got the third goal for Bucs three minutes before the hour as his strike was saved by Khune at close range, before Memela's free-kick crashed against the upright. Memela eventually made it 3-1 to the Buccaneers with 16 minutes remaining with a close-range strike after a good square ball from Shonga following a counter-attack. Chiefs continued to push for a way back in the clash, but Pirates remained resolute to run out 3-1 winners on the day.
