Hamburger SV has reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup and is dreaming of their first cup triumph since 1987. The North Germans won 3-2 (2-2, 2-2, 0 :1) on penalties and turned a temporary 0:2 deficit during regular time. In the penalty shoot-out, HSV keeper Heuer Fernandes saved twice, and Karlsruhe’s Daniel O’Shaughnessy shot the decisive attempt against the post. “It’s outstanding today what we unwound over 120 minutes,” said Heuer Fernandes afterwards on Sky. “The final is clearly the dream, the goal. It’s only one game left,” enthused double goal scorer Robert Glatzel.

In front of 25,000 spectators, Philip Heise (40th minute) scored the goals for KSC with a free kick and Philipp Hofmann (50th minute). HSV striker Glatzel equalized with two goals (52nd, 90th + 1). After yellow-red for Christoph Kobald (72nd), the Karlsruhe team only played with ten professionals. Sonny Kittel then missed the controversial penalty kick for HSV (72nd), which referee Felix Zwayer also gave after studying the video images. In the only second division duel of the quarter-finals, Baden had more chances up until the half-time break, despite having less possession of the ball. Benjamin Goller (19th) and Choi Kyoung-Rok (21st) gave the best chances against the not compelling Hamburg.

HSV sports director Michael Mutzel complained during the break that “the key duels all went to KSC”. This was confirmed five minutes after the restart when the HSV defense was not in the picture when Karlsruhe scored the second goal. Immediately after the goal, the game picked up even more intensity after a three substitutions by Hamburg. Despite being outnumbered, KSC kept going on the offensive and fought passionately.
