Super-sub Caroline Weir helped Manchester City kick off a stellar Sunday of Barclays FA Women’s Super League action with a derby day triumph over rivals Manchester United.  The Scottish ace’s late intervention propelled Gareth Taylor’s side to a 1-0 triumph to cut the gap on the Reds to just two points in fourth in the table. After Chelsea and Arsenal had played out an entertaining Friday night 0-0 draw in the first game of the weekend, Sunday’s five fixtures delivered yet more drama as Leicester hauled themselves further adrift of the drop with a 3-0 win against West Ham.

Ashleigh Neville struck the opener as Tottenham moved up to third thanks to a 2-0 victory over struggling Birmingham. Veatriki Sarri came close to giving Birmingham a shock lead but the breakthrough arrived for the visitors when Neville pounced from close range. Neville went close to doubling their lead while Ria Percival slammed the bar as Spurs pressed for a second to kill off the contest.

London City Lionesses kept up the heat on Liverpool at the top of the FA Women’s Championship as they ran out convincing 5-1 winners against Crystal Palace at Hayes Lane. Liverpool’s 3-0 win at home against Sunderland means they still sit ten points ahead of their closest challengers - but the Lionesses have a game in hand. Elsewhere, Bristol City continued their excellent run of form and moved up to fourth after beating Durham 3-0 away from home. Lewes won at Watford 2-0, Sheffield United breezed past Blackburn 4-0 while elsewhere, Coventry held Charlton to a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Katie Stengel’s goal and assist sealed a 3-0 win for Liverpool against Sunderland as the Reds extended their winning run to five games.  Liverpool went a goal ahead when Stengel scored a penalty before Sunderland were reduced to ten just after the break as Neve Herron saw red.  Yana Daniels got a second for the hosts just before full-time from a Stengel pass, and Missy Bo Kearns wrapped things up in added time.  The result sees Liverpool maintain their lead at the top of the table, while Sunderland remain down in ninth.

The 2021-22 Barclays FA Women’s Super League season will break following this weekend’s action as focus shifts towards the international scene. But while domestic competition takes a temporary back seat, there is still plenty to get excited about, with tournaments both new and old featuring some of the best international teams in the world. As ever, many of the BFA WSL stars will be looking to steal the show when they swap club colours for international jerseys.

The Arnold Clark Cup
A brand new invitational tournament, the Arnold Clark Cup will see hosts England compete against three of the world’s best sides in quick succession. Joining the Lionesses at the inaugural competition will be two-time FIFA World Cup winners Germany, 2020 Olympic gold medallists Canada and Spain, currently ranked ninth in the FIFA rankings, the highest position in their history. The games will be staged over the course of a week, with each team playing each other once in a round-robin format. Three venues around the country will host games - Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough, Norwich’s Carrow Road and Molineux in Wolverhampton.  Each matchday will be staged as double-headers at the same ground, with the action getting underway on February 17 at the Riverside when Germany’s clash with Spain, kicking-off at 2.30pm, is followed by England taking on Canada

AFC Asian Cup 2022
Over in the subcontinent, international football has been on the agenda over the last two weeks, with the spectacle of the 2022 Asian Cup taking place in India. And the tournament reached a crescendo on Sunday with China beating South Korea 3-2 in a thrilling final, for their ninth continental title, with Barclays FA WSL players at the forefront of the action. Tottenham’s on-loan striker Tang Jiali led the line for China and started her team’s dramatic comeback by converting a 68th minute penalty with her side 2-0 down. Zhang Linyan and Xiao Yuyi, in injury time, also found the net to complete a sensational turnaround for the Chinese team and cause heartbreak for Jiali’s club teammate Cho So-hyun, who captained the beaten finalists.
