On Friday night, it certainly was the Manqele show. Moroka Swallows' on-loan striker banished memories of a stop-start 2012-2013 season with an emphatic display against Mpumalanga Black Aces. Netting in the 18th, 23rd and 54th minute, Manqele displayed his natural goalscoring ability in one of his finest performances in the PSL. Black Aces were able to net two goals of their own, but Manqele's brilliance turned out to be the deciding factor. Zeca Marques may have uncovered a gold mine by bringing in Manqele from Mamelodi Sundowns, where he struggled to make a name for himself despite being considered as a deadly striker. Manqele will want to continue weaving his magic when the PSL resumes after the international break.
Moroka Swallows are one of the oldest professional football clubs in South Africa having been formed just after World War II in 1947. The team was originally set to be named Moroka Sweepers, but one of the founding fathers preferred the name 'Swallows', and so The Birds came into being in Masakeng, Moroka. The side is currently coached by Zeca Marques, the long-time assistant at the club who took over at the start of the 2012/13 campaign when former coach Gordon Igesund left to take up the reins of Bafana Bafana. The narrowly missed out on a place in the top eight last season on the final day of the campaign, and that will be seen as the minimum requirement for this year. The Birds exited last season’s Telkom Knockout in the first round after a penalty shootout defeat to Maritzburg United.
