After orchestrating Kaizer Chiefs' downfall in the Soweto derby on Saturday, McCarthy said he was available to play for Bafana Bafana again, if selected. "I am a South African and have never said no to the national team. But there's so much talent in this country. I saw 10 good players in this match [Saturday's derby which Pirates won 3-2]. I don't understand why they are not called up.
"If they think I can still make a contribution and if I am selected, yes I am here," said McCarthy.
McCarthy said he was heartbroken about what he did to Chiefs, the club he grew up supporting as a child in Hanover Park, Cape Town. His two goals were part of a first-half blitz that saw Amakhosi trailing 3-0 in the 24th minute.
McCarthy's goals, which take his tally to seven, put him among the league's top scorers.
"I was a big Chiefs fan when I was growing up. So, I am little heartbroken for what happened in the match. But I was happy to play against them. It was my first Soweto derby and I pushed myself a little extra," said McCarthy. It's rare for coaches to shower opposition players with praises but Chiefs trainer Vladimir Vermezovic spoke well of McCarthy. "I want to congratulate the big man Benni for a wonderful performance," said Vermezovic. "I am happy that Benni was a Chiefs supporter. He scored two goals against us but can you imagine what would have happened if he hated Chiefs? Our young players can learn a lot from him." McCarthy said playing in the Soweto derby was a special moment for him.
"I have played in the Uefa Champions League finals, in the World Cup and in other big matches in Europe, but I think Saturday's game was the greatest atmosphere and biggest match I have ever played in. "I was so nervous in the morning and I [told] assistant coach Teboho Moloi that I couldn't understand why. Credit to Chiefs, they could have dropped their heads, after going down 3-0. They gave us a big scare and I was scared that they were going to bite us down," McCarthy added.
THE SOWETO DERBY
The Soweto Derby is the biggest football fixture in South African football involving old foes Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. It marks the rivalry between these teams whose roots can be traced from Soweto, the biggest township in South Africa. This football fixture is rated as one of the fiercely-contested derbies in Africa, whether Chiefs and Pirates are clashing in a Premier Soccer League match, Cup game or charity confrontation. Before Covid-19 struck, it was also the most attended match in South Africa with tickets usually sold out within a few hours of sales ahead of the contest at the 90,000 capacity FNB Stadium. Even Bafana Bafana matches have over the years been overshadowed by the Soweto Derby in terms of attendance, hype and ambience inside the stadium.
That it is bigger than Bafana fixtures can be substantiated by the fact that South Africa hosted continental heavyweights Nigeria in a modestly attended FNB Stadium in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in November 2018. There is another fixture between Pirates and Swallows FC which is referred to as the Original Soweto Derby but it is nothing compared to battles between Amakhosi and the Buccaneers. For just over half a century, the Soweto derby clashes between Chiefs and Pirates have been witnessed. The first confrontation between these two giants was on January 24, 1970, with Pirates winning 6-4 at Orlando Stadium in the third-place game of the Rogue Beer Cup.
When they first met, it was the very first month in which Chiefs were formed, so the maiden clash came when Amakhosi were 17-years-old while Pirates had been existing for 33 years then. Interestingly, Chiefs owner Kaizer Motaung turned out for Pirates during his playing days before establishing his own club. The fact that Motanug had left Pirates the previous year to become a rival saw the first Soweto Derby being dubbed “The Match of the Year.” Chiefs won the first Soweto Derby league clash in April 1971, beating Pirates 4-3 in the then National Professional Soccer League.
