This was the year of the Swedes Minnows IFK Goteborg were given little chance when they were placed in a Champions League group comprising of Barcelona, Manchester United and Turkish giants Galatasaray. They showed flashes of brilliance when they led Manchester United at Old Trafford in their opener, but United would ensure that usual business followed with a 4-2 victory.
United would eventually end up leading the group after the first round of matches, but the Swedes had already produced the upset of the tournament by beating Barcelona 1-0 at home. The unsuspecting Red Devils would then walk in to a slaughter against a seething Barca at the Nou Camp and suffered a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Romario and co. Before recovering from that defeat, a complacent United were picked apart by Goteborg in the return leg and the Swedes would produce another sensational result  3-1 the score this time in favour of Goteborg.
Going in to the last round of matches, Goteborg were assured of top spot in the group and it would be Barcelona and Manchester United fighting to stay in the competition. United would thump Galatasaray 4-0 in their final encounter, but a lucky 1-1 draw for the Catalans against Goteburg at the Nou Camp would see Barca qualify in second place.

While everyone talks about the way in which a Romario-inspired Barcelona tore Manchester United to ribbons in the Camp Nou, we think the less said about that the better, so Dale and Mike rewatched the home game between the sides which was a much tighter affair.

Manchester United XI: Schmeichel, Parker, Irwin, May, Pallister, Butt, Kanchelskis, Ince, Keane, Hughes, Sharpe.
Barcelona XI: Busquets, Abelardo, Guardiola, Koeman, Barjuan, Martinez, Stoichkov, Nadal, Romario, Begiristain.

Turkish football had come a long way from when Bryan Robson helped West Bromwich Albion win 3-1 away to Galatasaray in the Uefa Cup in 1978, and this would be its greatest night. Galatasaray were an accomplished side – their spine of Bulent Korkmaz, Tugay and Hakan Sukur was also the spine of the Turkey side that ended 42 years on the periphery of international football by qualifying for Euro 96 – yet far from world-beaters. They had won the title only because of an 8-0 away win at Ankaragucu SK on the final day of the previous season; and in the 10 games they played in the European Cup that season, their only two victories were against Cork City, each by a single goal.
