Benjani scored a hat-trick in an amazing game as Portsmouth beat Reading 7-4 at Fratton Park in the highest scoring game in Premier League history. As well as the 11 goals and the hat-trick, the match also had two penalties, of which one was saved. What is more, Reading keeper Marcus Hahnemann was one of the better players on the pitch and if it was not for his saves, Pompey could have easily hit double figures. Portsmouth went in at the break leading 2-1, with the insane action happening in the second-half. Pompey completely controlled the first-half and could have had more than their Benjani double had it not being for the heroics of Hahnemann who did superbly to deny a low Papa Bouba Diop drive and a point blank Glen Johnson effort in the first half. He could do nothing about the two goals though, the first of which came in only the seventh minute when Benjani taped home at the back post after John Utaka had found him with a teasing cross from the by-line.
Steve Coppell will be absolutely furious with the second goal in the 37th minute though, as the Zimbabwean striker was allowed to stroll through the Reading defence unchallenged before placing a low effort into the corner of the net from the edge of the area.Reading got back into the match just before the break when Stephen Hunt bundled in from close range, although a Liam Rosenior effort that hit the underside of the bar may have been awarded by the linesman anyway as it looked to have crossed the line.Just after the restart and Reading amazingly found themselves level, as Dave Kitson got to ball ahead of a wandering David James, before putting in a superb shot that fizzed in from a tough angle way out on the left wing. However, their lead didn't last long, as Hermann Hreidarsson got in between Hahnemann and Ivar Ingimarsson to head Pompey back in front.
James then went from villain to hero as he produced a superb save to deny Nicky Shorey from the spot after Diop had handled in the box. Ingimarsson, who had a nightmare game, then gave away possession in midfield, Sulley Muntari put Benjani in the clear, and the Zimbabwean striker rounded Hahnemann to tap home his hat-trick. Niko Kranjcar then made it 5-2 as he bundled home after another Ingimarsson error, but it was 5-3 when Shane Long deflected home a James Harper strike. Nine minutes from the end, Sean Davis' long shot hit the head of the hapless Ingimarsson for number six, and in stoppage time Muntari made it seven from the spot. Reading would at least get the last laugh in an otherwise miserable afternoon, as Shorey had a long range effort deflected in, but the visitors had to enter the dressing room knowing they had scored four away from home and were still soundly beaten.
