The son of a former Jamaican racehorse jockey, Cunningham spent three seasons at Albion between 1977 and 1979 and his name is still prominent throughout the terraces of The Hawthorns, such was the impact of the dazzling winger. At a time when institutionalised racism was rife throughout society it would have been easy for Laurie to fade into the background, but his passion for music and fashion ensured he stood out from the crowd. Forming one third of 'The Three Degrees' along with Cyrille Regis and Brendan Batson, West Bromwich Albion became one of the most attractive and exciting English sides in the late 1970s. His lasting legacy? The first black professional footballer to represent England at any level. Rather unkindly he won only six caps after earning his first full England cap against Wales in 1979.
Albion fans will remember Cunningham for his exceptional display in the iconic 5-3 win over Manchester United in 1978 when he ran Stewart Houston ragged. In the summer of 1979 Laurie Cunningham moved to Spanish giants Real Madrid in a £950,000 deal. After scoring twice in his debut against Valencia he helped them win a league and cup double. Injuries hindered his career but he was to achieve another first in 1983 when he was reunited with Ron Atkinson at Old Trafford in 1983 on loan. Laurie Cunningham was the pioneer in a list of players to have played for both Real Madrid and Manchester United that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Michael Owen.
