Crystal Palace were chasing promotion in Division Three and their rivals on the day were looking for a return back to the top flight. After despatching Chelsea in the previous round, Malcolm Allison’s men were the underdogs yet again but would, yet again, upset the odds.
Alan Whittle scored the only goal of the game and it was classic Crystal Palace. With Sunderland pouring men forward keeper Paul Hammond claimed a cross and released Peter Taylor down the right. His pace and trickery eventually got him to the byline and his cutback was neat controlled and smashed home from close range. Roker Park was silenced and Crystal Palace were heading to the FA Cup Semi Finals for the first time in their history.
