Ce match retour de huitièmes de la Coupe UEFA 1988-1989 avait au départ moyennement d'intérêt. Au match aller, les Italiens avaient gagné 2-0 à Munich, assurant pratiquement leur qualification avant même le match retour. Pour espérer se qualifier, les Bavarois doivent gagner par au moins deux buts d'écart. Une victoire 2-0 leur permettrait d'aller en prolongations...
