After many barren years, Liverpool FC have won 3 Cup competitions in a single season. Liverpool completed an unprecedented achievement in playing the maximum number of matches in a season by reaching the final of every knock-out competition they entered. Not only that, but they managed to win all the competitions. Yes, 10 years ago this week, Liverpool completed the 2001 Cup Treble. An incredible story for a young side living in the shadow of Liverpool FC’s past glories. This was the first senior level silverware win for young players like (future club captain) Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
The manager at the time, Gerard Houllier, had created a mix of youth and experience that will forever be remembered as one of the best cup side in football. They played a different style of football to what is expected from a Liverpool side. Still, no one can argue with the results. Houllier fashioned a quick counter attacking side and famously told critics that you can keep the ball, but we will keep the points. Liverpool first won the domestic league cup, which was called the Worthington League Cup at the time. It was in a final against Birmingham City that went to a nail biting penalty shoot out.

The best team on the day won and LFC took the Cup. A few months later, Liverpool took on a fantastic Arsenal side in the FA Cup final. The FA Cup is the world’s oldest (still running) football competition and it is always hotly contested. The Arsenal side that day was completely dominate for 85 minutes of the match and were leading by 1 goal. Then, in the final minutes of the match, a young Michael Owen stepped up and scored two quick goals. Liverpool lifted the FA Cup in dramatic style and that game will forever be called the Michael Owen final. A week after the FA Cup dramatics, Liverpool played against a little known side from the Basque region in Spain, AD Alaves. Football experts predicted a boring game between two sides that only counter attack. However, an amazing Cup treble was completed with one of the most unbelievable finals in history. It was a pulsating game were each side refused to give up, scoring 9 goals between them. In the end Liverpool won 5-4 in extra time. The treble was complete and history was written.
