Brazil played the third place match, against Italy. The Italians scored first, with Causio, in the first half. Brazil's first goal was scored by Nelinho, right-defense; Nelinho had an impressive ability in kicking the ball very strongly; in the goal against Italy, the ball was so strong that it did a very visible curve; a few years later, Nelinho, before the TV cameras, accepted and won a challenge: he kicked a ball over the rings of Mineirão, one of the biggest Brazilian stadia. Dirceu scored the second Brazilian goal.Brazil finished the 1978 World Cup in third place, and Italy in fourth. A few Brazilians (Oscar and Cerezzo) and several Italians (Zoff, Cabrini, Gentile, Scirea, Antognoni, Paolo Rossi) who played that match in 1978 would meet again in the World Cup of 1982, in Spain.

Le Brésil n’a plus que le match de classement à se mettre sous la dent. Nous, déçus par le Brésil, souhaitons plutôt la victoire de l’Italie, une Italie qui a fait refleurir son jeu d’attaque et qui, sans ses vieux démons du catenaccio, aurait pu peut-être mieux faire encore. La squadra passe tout près de la troisième place. Causio reprend de la tête un centre de Rossi qui a débordé sur la droite (38e minute) et ouvre le score. Trois minutes plus tard, il tire sur la barre. Deux minutes plus tard, c’est au tour de Rossi. Le Brésil se fâche, fait rentrer Reinaldo et arrache sa victoire sur deux tirs de loin que Dino Zoff a mal évalué : Nelinho (63e), Dirceu (70e). C’est son nom qui figurera au palmarès. Mais sa gloire n’en sera pas alourdie pour autant.
