 Valencia, in the early 1960s, under- lined Spain's status as the top European nation at club level. Real Madrid had won the European Cup five times; Barcelona had won the Fairs Cup twice and Valencia stepped straight into their footsteps by reach- ing the Fairs Cup Final in three consecutive years, 1962-64. Valencia defeated Barcelona and Dinamo Zagreb respectively in the first two. The 1962 victory over Barcelona was an explosive occasion, Valencia winning the first leg 6-2, with a hat-trick from Spanish international Vicente Guillot, then drawing 1-1 in the Catalan capital. A year later Valencia won both legs against Zagreb. But it was not to be third time lucky, as they lost the 1964 Final to Zaragoza. At domestic level, Valencia won the league for the fourth time in 1971, then the cup for a fifth time in 1979. A year later Valencia regained European allure by winning the Cup-Winners’ Cup. The final against Arsenal in the Heysel stadium was a- disappointment. Even Argentina's 1978 World Cup hero, Mario Kempes, was unable to engineer a break- through, but at least Valencia had the consolation of winning on penalties. 

In the late 1990s Valencia sought to regain their earlier preeminence with the appointment of Italian Claudio Ranieri as coach and the high-cost purchase of glamour superstars such as Brazil's Romario and Argentina's Ariel Ortega. But it was under the more workmanlike approach of Argentine Hector Cuper that they twice finished Champions League runners-up in successive seasons to Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Valencia celebrate a Spanish title success as consolation for double disappointment in Champions League finals.
