On November 26, 2013, Ajax added a magnificent chapter to its rich club history. The Amsterdam team defeated the star-studded FC Barcelona in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League with a score of 2-1. Ten years later, we look back on this spectacle in the - then still - Amsterdam ArenA with Lasse Schöne, Jasper Cillessen, Danny Hoesen, and Ricardo van Rhijn.
The all-powerful FC Barcelona visited Amsterdam in the autumn of 2013 with famous names in the selection such as Andrés Iniesta, Xavi and Neymar. “They were guys you looked up to, they had a world-class team. It was sometimes fun when you saw them on the ball,” Schöne honestly admits years later. Despite the fact that the Ajax players had a lot of respect for the ‘great’ Barça, they started the match with Amsterdam bravado and fighting spirit. “In the discussion we said to each other that Barcelona was not used to teams putting pressure,” Hoesen remembers well. “Usually they commanded so much respect that teams dug in. We wanted to do the exact opposite and clapped straight away.”
Ajax took the lead in the nineteenth minute through Thulani Serero. The South African midfielder converted Van Rhijn’s cross into a goal. “We always wanted to attack this way. I was able to pass the ball straight in one go and Danny (Hoesen, ed.) deliberately let the ball run, allowing Thulani to tap in.” Hoesen doubled the lead in the ArenA shortly before halftime. “It was a nice relief, especially because it was 2-0. It gave us a nice break,” says the now 32-year-old striker. “I think everyone was surprised and amazed that we went into halftime with a 2-0 lead, even though it was fair. We told each other that we had to hold on as long as possible,” says Van Rhijn, his former teammate. Shortly after tea, Ajax suffered two major setbacks. Joël Veltman had to leave the field after he brought down Neymar who broke through in the penalty area. Xavi stood behind the ball and shot flawlessly, giving the Catalans a 2-1 lead in Amsterdam. Despite a tough second half, the ten Ajax players still won. After the match, the ArenA shook to its foundations. The Ajax selection was crazy. “It was really a matter of survival and the relief was enormous. Considering the whole evening and the atmosphere in the stadium, the victory gave a huge kick. It was a special moment in my career,” said Cillessen.
