England opened their FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 campaign with an unconvincing 1-0 win over Haiti in Group D in Brisbane. A dramatic first half saw two VAR checks and a retaken penalty which Georgia Stanway converted in the 29th minute. The Lionesses were comfortable pre-match favourites, but debutants Haiti proved they were a force to be reckoned with and frustrated the reigning European champions for much of the 90 minutes. If Sarina Wiegman's side are to go all the way this tournament, they will need to be a good deal more compact and clinical than they were against Les Grenadières.
