Après avoir chuté en demie finale face aux USA (3-1), la France retrouve la Suède à Sinsheim, en Allemagne, pour le match comptant pour la troisième place de la Coupe du Monde. Devant 25 000 spectateurs enthousiastes, l'inévitable Lotta Schelin ouvre la marque à la 29e minute avant que Thomis, entrée en jeu à la place de Nécib blessée, n'égalise sur un bon service de Gaëtane Thiney (56e). On assiste jusqu'alors à un match équilibré, avec notamment une barre de chaque côté, par l'intermédiaire de Bussaglia côté tricolore et Öqvist pour la Suède. Cette dernière, très remuante, va se faire exclure pour une charge jugée illégale sur Sonia Bompastor (68e).

Les Scandinaves, réduites à dix, parviendront à arracher la victoire en fin de match par Hammarstrom, qui expédie un missile en pleine lucarne de Céline Deville, impuissante (82e). Cette défaite constitue tout de même le meilleur résultat de l'équipe de France dans cette compétition. Les Suédoises avaient certainement un poil plus d'expérience de ce genre de rencontres puisqu'elles avaient déjà brillé en Coupe du Monde auparavant (2e place en 2003, 3e place en 1991).

Marie Hammarstrom scored in the 82nd minute Saturday, giving short-handed Sweden a 2-1 victory over France in the third-place game at the Women’s World Cup. Down a player for almost 15 minutes after Josefine Oqvist was sent off for kicking Sonia Bompastor, Sweden won a corner kick that the French managed to clear at the near post. But the ball popped out to Hammarstrom, who faked out a defender with a small side-volley, touched the ball a second time and then let fly with a thunderous left-footed shot from the edge of the box. It was Hammarstrom’s first goal for Sweden, and it allowed the Swedes to do the hippity-hoppity dance that has become their trademark one last time. Lotta Schelin staked Sweden to an early lead, scoring her second goal of the tournament in the 29th minute. Sara Larsson booted the ball from about midfield and Schelin, running at a dead sprint, caught up to it at the edge of the box. As the French goalkeeper Berangere Sapowicz rushed out to try and smother the ball, Schelin deftly flicked it into the net with the outside of her right foot.
