Absent de l'élite depuis 1992, Luton Town a validé, ce samedi, sa montée en Premier League, grâce à sa victoire contre Coventry City en finale de playoffs. Dans un Wembley copieusement garni, les deux équipes ont mis un temps fou à se départager. Les Hatters avaient ouvert la marque par l'intermédiaire de Jordan Clark (23e), les Bantams ayant répliqué en seconde période via Gustavo Hamer (66e). Après une prolongation très crispante, la décision s'est faite aux tirs au but. Fankaty Dabo a été le premier à manquer sa tentative, en envoyant le ballon hors du cadre, et cela s'est avéré fatal pour Coventry. Luton est donc promu en compagnie de Burnley et de Sheffield United.

C'est l'aboutissement d'une fulgurante progression pour ce club de la région de Londres, qui était au 5e niveau national il y a dix ans. L'équipe a eu une grosse frayeur samedi, lorsque son capitaine Tom Lockyer s'est effondré sur la pelouse de Wembley en début de match. Le défenseur gallois a été évacué sur une civière et conduit à l'hôpital où, selon le club, il était conscient et a pu parler à sa famille.

Luton Town completed one of the most remarkable rises in English football history on Saturday, beating Coventry City on penalties in the Championship play-off final to secure a place in the Premier League next season. The game got off to a worrying start for Luton as talisman defender Tom Lockyer had to be stretchered off after collapsing with nobody near him. Fortunately, the club later announced that he was conscious and had been taken to hospital for assessment. Jordan Clark broke the deadlock for Luton after 23 minutes with a powerful finish at the near post as the Hatters totally dominated proceedings in the first half. However, Coventry roared back after halftime and found the equalizer its improved play deserved thanks to Gustavo Hamer’s unerring finish into the bottom corner. With the scores level after 90 minutes, the match went to extra time as the tension from both ends of a sold out Wembley Stadium became palpable. As both teams visibly tired during a grueling period of extra time, chances became few and far between and there became a growing sense that this final would be decided on penalties.
