In this clash, the league race had not yet taken shape but Chiefs were promising to dethrone the Brazilians and claim the first PSL title since 2015. Then under Ersnt Middendorp, Chiefs won 2-0 away at Loftus Versfeld as Masandawana's title-defending credentials were being questioned.

Samir Nurkovic had arrived at Chiefs three months earlier and made a big statement as this was his second game to score in the PSL. He first struck six minutes into that Loftus battle, before firing past Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene again with 12 minutes to go before full time.

Even after introducing attackers Sibusiso Vilakazi and Jose Meza in the second half, Sundowns still found no answers to hit back.
