Khama Billiat returned to the Chiefs line up and Virgil Vries deputised for the injured Itumeleng Khune, while Anthony Laffor was handed his first start of the league campaign for the visitors. It was Laffor who opened the scoring for Masandawana as early as the third minute after beating Willard Katsande on the far side inside the box to striker a low shot into the far corner. Katsande then brought Chiefs level in the 14th minute with a free-header after lurking at the back post after some poor defending by the Sundowns defence. Six minutes later, Laffor should have made it 2-1 for Pitso Mosimane’s charges after arriving late inside the box, but his strike was blocked on the line by the lurking defence. The pace of the game slowed down after half-an-hour in the heat at FNB Stadium after a frantic start, which led to a lack of chances at both ends. The chances were few and far between towards the end of the half and the sides went to the break level pegging at 1-1. Ernst Middendorp made a double substitution at the beginning of the second stanza with Godfrey Walusimbi and Hendrick Ekstein making way for Bernard Parker and Teenage Hadebe.
Parker almost made an instant impact for Chiefs moments later with a diving header at the near post that sailed narrowly wide following a cross from George Maluleka. Laffor had an opportunity to restore the lead for the visitors on the hour-mark with a half-volley at the back post that was swallowed by Vries. Parker had another chance to grab the lead for Amakhosi in the 68th minute with a glancing header at the near post that sailed slightly wide at the far post. Mosimane made a double substitution of his own in the 72nd minute, bringing on Sphelele Mkhulise in place of Jeremy Brockie and Lyle Lakay in place of Mosa Lebusa. Lebohang Maboe restored the lead for Masandawana nine minutes before time after Vries mistimed a high ball that bounced, which allowed the former Maritzburg United man to tap into an empty net. Middendorp’s troops were probing for the equaliser but Sundowns defended in numbers and managed to hold on for the win.
