The Football Ferns have held onto a draw with South Korea in the second match of this international series. This series was the first of a feast of women's football in New Zealand over the next year. And the action resumes with the visit of the world champions, the USA, to these shores in late January next year. That should get Kiwi fans in the mood for the tournament, with the repechage event to be held shortly after that, before some final warm-up games and the World Cup itself.
Collin Bell will be disappointed with the result this evening. He spoke pre-match about looking to improve upon the consistency of South Korea's performances, especially with such a short turnaround, but his girls blew numerous chances and left victory out on the field. On another day, they could have easily had three of four tonight, but aside from Ye-eun goal in the middle of the second half, they lacked any accuracy in the final third. Hwa-yeon was a livewire for them up front, injecting plenty of energy with her runs and getting in the right positions. Her and her teammates just couldn't find a way through. Today's performance shouldn't take away from what has been a good year for South Korea though, and they look to building nicely ahead of the World Cup next year.
