Three former players have been inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame . Karen Carney was the first to be named on Thursday morning. A legend of English football, Carney won 144 England caps and three league titles during her time at Arsenal. The creative genius joined the Gunners from local club Birmingham City in 2006 and also won three FA Cups, one Uefa Women’s Cup, and one Premier League cup before joining American side Chicago Red Stars. Carney returned to Birmingham after a year in the US and later played for Chelsea, where she won a further FA Cup in 2018 and the WSL Top Goalscorer award in 2014.

Next up was Eni Aluko, a natural goalscorer and WSL legend who most notably made 73 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 32 goals. Having won the FA Women’s Young Player of the Year at her first club Birmingham City, Aluko won the WSL three times with Chelsea as well as lifting the FA Women’s Cup twice before moving abroad to represent Serie A giants Juventus.
“The WSL is the top league in the world. I think it’s seen as premium, in terms of broadcasting rights and professionalism for players,” Aluko told Sky Sports in recognition of her Hall of Fame induction. “In terms of the full package, this is the league to be in. To be recognised as part of that history means a lot to me.” Aluko also made over 100 appearances for England during her career, reaching the Euro 2009 final and earning a third-place finish in the 2015 World Cup.

The third inductee of the day was named as the highly decorated Katie Chapman. Starting out her career in the Millwall Lionesses youth sector, Chapman later represented both Arsenal and Chelsea in the WSL and played an integral role in midfield. “Does this mean I’m famous?” Chapman joked . “It is an honour to receive this.” During seven years in the WSL, she won four league titles and lifted the FA Cup four times, adding three league cups for good measure. What’s more, Chapman also gave birth to three sons during her playing career.
