The home side started the better of the two with a few chances in the opening exchanges. Koby Arthur had the first of those with some tricky footwork down the left before his effort went just over the bar. Emile Acquah’s flick on then fell to Reece Smith who made a darting run into the box before seeing his strike well saved by Gateshead keeper Dan Langley. The Heed grew into the game as the half played out with their first chance coming after 15 minutes, Adam Campbell’s strike was well parried by Dan Gyollai. The visitors took the lead just after 20 minutes when a long ball over the top evaded the Magpies defence leaving Gateshead in a two on one situation. Paul Blackett kept his cool and squared to Dan Ward who placed the ball into the net. The remainder of the half was relatively even with both sides having chances to either get the equaliser or extend their lead. The Magpies had a lot of freedom down the right mainly through Reece Smith who latched onto a Kpekawa ball into the box but unfortunately his effort was just wide.

Blackett’s effort was well blocked by Alan Massey before a short corner from the visitors was worked to Ethan Pye whose header drifted over the bar. Dev made his first change at half time with Shawn McCoulsky coming on for Koby Arthur. The bumper crowd at York Road saw Maidenhead start the second half the better of the two sides with some sustained pressure. Nathaniel-George’s strike from outside the box was tipped wide by Langley. Minutes later, Acquah found Smith in the box but his shot was deflected for a corner. That was Acquah’s final action of the game as he was replaced by Adrian Clifton, later in the game Dev also brought on Samson Esan for Reece Smith. Gateshead grew into the second half and had chances to kill the game. The first of those came from Paul Blackett who broke through the Magpies defence, his effort was well saved by Gyollai. Gateshead captain Greg Olley received the ball minutes later in the box. Thankfully, his strike bounced off the post and was cleared by the Magpies defence.
McCoulsky had an array of chances late into the game as Dev’s boys pushed for the equaliser. An Alan Massey long ball was well controlled by McCoulsky who struck the effort just wide of the post. The latter of McCoulsky’s chances came in the 85th minute after he rolled the ball past the defender before blazing wide. The Magpies did have one final effort in injury time thanks to a good set piece delivery from Ryan Upward. The cross was met by Cole Kpekawa but unfortunately his header went over the bar and the game ended in defeat.
