ohn Maduka’s Maritzburg United are still searching for top gear. Their winless start to the new DStv Premiership campaign shifted to three matches on Friday night when they played to a tame 0-0 draw with last season’s relegation rivals Swallows at Harry Gwala Stadium. More than anything else, a dearth of belligerence in the danger area ensured that coach Maduka’s team stayed in an unsettled mode following their 3-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs. The Midlands side’s hammering in Egoli followed a 1-1 draw with Sekhukhune United in their season-opener on home turf at “HGS” last weekend.

Maduka made several changes from Tuesday’s bad outing, but there remained an emphasis on possession-based football, with most build-ups along the left flank and often featuring overlapping fullback Bongani Sam. They did not trouble Birds goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa as much as they would have liked, though, and the situation wasn’t any more threatening at the other end for Kgosietsile “King” Ndlovu between the Maritzburg sticks. When referee Xola Sitela blew for half-time, the two teams had produced just a couple of shots on target between them, not least because Maritzburg did not have any recognised strikers in their line-up. Both sides clearly needed to step up their attacking play in their shared desire to break the deadlock in the second period, but shots on target remained scarce at either end. Lelethu Skelem fluffed a good scoring opportunity for Maritzburg in the 70th minute, and there was little more to write about before the final whistle arrived.
