The 2022/23 Scottish Premiership season is here, getting underway over the final weekend of July, and the 12 teams are fighting for glory. Celtic enter the campaign as champions, winning their title back from Rangers in an excellent first campaign as manager for Ange Postecoglou. It was the Bhoys’ 10th title in the past 11 seasons and moves them just three behind Rangers in the fight to be Scotland’s most dominant club. Can Celtic close the gap to two this season? Or will Rangers re-extend their advantage over their bitter rivals?
As it has been for quite some time, the Scottish Premiership is once again expected to be a two-horse race. Celtic and Rangers have had a stranglehold over the Scottish top flight for decades, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen the last side to win the title outside the Big Two – in 1984/85.
Since that season, Celtic and Rangers have shared 37 titles with the Bhoys just about edging the head-to-head at 19 to 18 – moving clear thanks to last season’s win. As defending champions, Celtic will be confident of their chances to retain their title, especially as they haven’t won fewer than three titles in a row since 2003/04 when their success was sandwiched by Rangers taking the league (albeit as part of a wider Celtic-dominated period). Celtic have been busy in the summer transfer window, signing Jota on a permanent basis with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Aaron Mooy also signing (among others), but Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers have also added to their squad. A total of seven players have been signed to Ibrox including Rabbi Matondo, Ben Davies and Tom Lawrence.
