Eddie Howe made 10 changes from Sunday's draw but was dealt an early blow when Emil Krafth was taken off on a stretcher, replaced by Trippier, and returned to the bench in the second half wearing a boot and with crutches. However, Lascelles used the opportunity to make his mark given the stiff competition he faces to earn a starting place in defence, reacting quickly to his initially-blocked effort to fire in the rebound for his goal. It came 19 minutes after Josh Dacres-Cogley was chipped in behind to set-up Nevitt, the former non-league striker who only turned professional last year when he joined Tranmere. Newcastle improved in the second half with Wood, Sven Botman and Joe Willock coming close, while Tranmere defender Kyle Jameson was perhaps fortunate to be shown just a yellow card for a late tackle on goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Micky Mellon's side continued to battle and enjoyed spells of pressure late on but Newcastle, who will play Crystal Palace in the third round, held firm to retain their unbeaten start in all competitions this season.
