Cape Town City have won their first-ever MTN8 title after defeating defending champions SuperSport United 4-1 on penalties on Saturday evening. Fagrie Lakay almost got the lead for Matsatsantsa in the ninth minute with a great chance inside the box but struck his effort over the bar. The Citizens were absorbing the pressure in the first quarter of an hour, looking to catch United on counter-attacks with the pace of Craig Martin. Evans Rusike almost grabbed the lead for Matsatsantsa on the half-hour mark with a powerful low strike inside the box, but City shot-stopper Leeuwenburgh made a great save. The match was swinging from end to end as Thabo Nodada nearly snatched the opener for City two minutes later following a counter-attack, but his strike hit the post. Ayanda Patosi should have got the breakthrough for Benni McCarthy’s troops ten minutes before the break following a square pass from Gift Links, but he struck his effort over the bar with only Ronwen Williams to beat

Craig Martin had an opportunity to break the deadlock for City two minutes after the break following a cross from Links but his header inside the box sailed over the bar.  Edmilson Dove should have grabbed the lead for the Citizens ten minutes into the second stanza after going through on goal but United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made a great save to deny the full-back.  The game was starting to get physical with a quarter of an hour remaining, while the tempo of the match was slowing down.

Links almost snatched a dramatic winner five minutes before time for City with a belting volley inside the box that crashed against the crossbar.  In the end, neither side could find the back of the net in regulation time and the match went into extra time. The match lacked rhythm in the early stages of the first half of extra time, while the second stanza did not fare any differently as City were the only side pushing for a winning goal.  Neither side could find a winning goal in extra-time, forcing the game into a shoot-out, where City held their nerve to triumph 4-1 for their maiden MTN8 crown.  Stand to win with the MTN8 Wafa Wafa competition, dial *130*8# to opt-in and recharge with R10 or more for a chance to win.
