SuperSport United claimed their first MTN8 title after defeating Cape Town City 4-2 on penalties in the final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.  It was a tough battle in midfield with City looking to have a slight edge over SuperSport. The Cape side broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through a neat finish from Sibusiso Masina, who clinically poked his shot in the bottom corner. United tried to level matters and captain Dean Furman had an opportunity to do so after a rebound landed in his path only for the midfielder to volley the ball over the crossbar.   Ebrahim Seedat made a crucial stop from a goal-bound Bradley Grobler effort, with goalkeeper Shu-Aib Walters in no-man’s land.

Nevertheless, that proved to be the final chance of the half as City went into the break leading 1-0.  Jeremy Brockie got United’s first shot on target in the 56th minute after cutting in from the left and shooting towards goal, but Shu-Aib Walters made a comfortable save in the end. Lehlohonolo Majoro had a glorious chance to double City’s lead from a Lyle Lakay low cross, but the striker failed to hit the target from close range.  Minutes later, Majoro had another opportunity to double his team’s lead after an under-hit back pass from Clayton Daniels put goalkeeper Ronwen Williams under pressure, but the striker failed to make United pay for their mistake.

Substitute Thabo Mnyamane made City rue their missed chances after latching onto a Grobler pass and finished beautifully to level the game at 1-1 in the 79th minute. Unfortunately for SuperSport, Mnyamane injured himself and had to leave the field. Having made all of their substitutions, United had to go into extra time with 10 men after the scores were tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes. In extra time, both sets of players looked tired and were cramping as the game was played at high intensity. Not many chances were created and the game went to penalties after the score remained at 1-1 after extra time.  Williams was fantastic in the SuperSport goals as he saved Lyle Lakay and Judas Moseamedi’s spot-kicks, with Dove Wome scoring the winning penalty to earn SuperSport a 4-2 win in the shoot-out.
