Chelsea claimed the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title on a thrilling final day of the season that saw drama up and down the country as the season drew to a close. The Blues were locked in a battle with Arsenal and knew they had to match the Gunners' result to secure the title and, though they trailed Manchester United at half time, they got the job done with a 4-2 win – read more here.
For much of the day, Arsenal were the champions elect and battled to victory at West Ham, while there were also crucial results for Manchester City and Tottenham. Arsenal missed out on a fourth Barclays FA WSL title despite a 2-0 final day win away at West Ham. Goals from substitute Stina Blackstenius and Steph Catley ensured Jonas Eidevall’s team ended the season on a winning note and that they only lost once in the league all season. Despite doing all they could on the day, it was not enough to top the table. Chelsea collecting maximum points meant the Gunners result was academic and by the time they took the lead the Blues had already got themselves in front against Manchester United, having twice trailed. For a long time it would look like West Ham would deny the visitors three points, but Blackstenius came off the bench to break the hosts’ resilience on the hour mark. A wonderful effort from Mead rattled the crossbar as Arsenal looked to end the contest and they got their second not long after through Catley’s brilliant finish.
Manchester City cemented their place in next season’s Champions League with a 4-0 win over Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Lauren Hemp, Khadija Shaw, Ellen White and Alex Greenwood all netted for the Citizens in their final game of the Barclays FA WSL season.
City ultimately finished third overall, eight points behind second-placed Arsenal and nine shy of champions Chelsea, who sealed their third straight league title with victory at Kingsmeadow.
Reading, meanwhile, concluded their campaign in eighth place after failing to find a win in their final ten league matches. Ash Neville’s second-half header gave Spurs a 1-0 win over Leicester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to round off their great season. Rehanne Skinner, an ex-Leicester player and manager, led Spurs to victory to secure fifth place in the league, their highest top-flight finish. The Foxes had their WSL place for next season confirmed in midweek, despite being winless in the league since February. The breakthrough came in the 49th minute, Neville rising highest at the back post to head Jess Naz’s cross down so it bounced past Demi Lambourne. Spurs should have doubled their advantage in the 66th minute, but Molly Bartrip’s fizzling shot flew just over the crossbar, as the defender finished off a season playing every minute of WSL matches. Aileen Whelan ended her Brighton & Hove Albion career on a high with the second half equaliser in her side’s 1-1 draw with Everton. Whelan announced yesterday that the clash would be her last game with the Seagulls, and she left her mark with a shot into the bottom left corner at the People's Pension Stadium. The result meant Brighton finished seventh and Everton 10th in the table on the last day of the Barclays FA WSL season.
Birmingham City signed off from the Barclays FA Women’s Super League in style with a 1-0 derby day win over Aston Villa. Blues’ relegation was confirmed on Wednesday thanks to defeat to Manchester City, but Veatriki Sarri’s first-half strike ensured Birmingham ended their 11-year stay in the top flight with a win. Darren Carter’s side threatened from the outset, Jade Pennock hitting the bar after just three minutes after good work from Sarri to play in the forward. The away side were not to be denied, however, as Pennock turned provider to Sarri and the Greek international scored with a cross that found its way into the back of the next with just 10 minutes played and held on for the win.
