Le Galatasaray AŞ a enregistré sa première victoire de la saison en UEFA Champions League en dominant le FC København 3-1 dans sa forteresse du Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi. La différence s'est faite en première période, où les trois buts des locaux ont été marqués par l'entremise de Felipe Melo, Wesley Sneijder et Didier Drogba. Claudemir a réduit l'écart à la 88e minute. Avec le succès du Real Madrid CF sur la Juventus, les Turcs passent de la dernière à la deuxième position du Groupe B.

Après la gifle 6-1 reçue du Real et le nul 2-2 à Turin, Galatasaray se devait d'adopter une approche offensive. Et Roberto Mancini, qui disputait son premier match d'UEFA Champions League à domicile avec son nouveau club, tenait à ne pas se prendre les pieds dans le tapis. Le pressing turc a porté ses fruits dès le dixième minute avec une tête de Felipe Melo sur un bon centre de Dany Nounkeu. Profitant des espaces laissés par les Danois pour tenter d'égaliser, Galatasaray a doublé la mise à la 38e minute sur une frappe de Sneijder après un excellent travail d'Emmanuel Eboué. Le même Eboué qui servait son compatriote Drogba juste avant la pause pour enfoncer le clou. Les locaux se sont ensuite contentés de gérer leur avance, laissant l'initiative aux protégés de Ståle Solbakken. Ces derniers sauvaient l'honneur à deux minutes du terme grâce au milieu brésilien Claudemir, suite à une bonne combinaison avec Nicolai Jørgensen et Youssef Toutouh.

Galatasaray now harbors strong hope of maintain their position in second place in Group B with four points, in order to secure a spot in the Champions League finals. First half goals by Felipe Melo (10th min.), Wesley Sneijder (38th min.) and Didier Drogba (45th min.) sealed the deal as Copenhagen's sole goal, scored by Claudemir De Souza, came in the game's 88th minute. Galatasaray's next Champions League test will be on November 5th in Denmark as Copenhagen takes on the hosting duties. On November 27th, Real Madrid host Galatasaray and on December 10th, Galatasaray host Juventus. Galatasaray Coach Roberto Mancini commented on last night's win by stating, "We played an excellent first half. I was not expecting us to display such an excellent performance in the first half, because as a team we still need time. We played excellently for 60 minutes."

Commending the fans on their outstanding display of support for the team, Mancini stated that the group is still open. "If we want to play a final with Juventus then we need to develop ourselves further. For a chance to make it past this group round, we must be in better physical condition," stated Mancini. Drogba scored his 42nd goal in Champions League matches, which is equal to the entire Fenerbahçe team's goals scored in their Champions League campaign to date. Melo's goal in the tenth minute was his first score ever in a Champions League game. Also in Group B, Juventus lost to Real Madrid by 2-1, which places the Italian representatives third with two points behind Galatasaray. Real Madrid is the group's take-away leader with nine points. After last night's victory, Galatasaray follows with four points, a much better standings outcome than their previous position in last place. With last night's loss, Copenhagen now takes up the rear with a single point.
