Sturm showed from the start how they became head of the chasing pack. The Graz side, unbeaten in seven matches, set the tone in the early phases, with Hojlund and Jantscher forcing Philipp Köhn to make saves on transitions, and Jantscher going close with their third attempt. Our side first threatened after 16 minutes as the relentless Andi Ulmer chipped a superb cross to Junior Adamu, who volleyed it wide. Jaissle's proteges then stepped up the pace and grew in defensive mettle. Brenden Aaronson bamboozled the Sturm defence before hitting it to Karim Adeyemi on the right. He took the ball well and smashed it right in! The referee's assistant's offside flag went up though and it remained goalless. Luka Sucic also found Adeyemi form a set piece, but his glancing header sent the ball just wide of the far post

While the first half had been an even one, the balance of power switched our way after the change of ends. Adamu sent a backheeled effort just wide before our next opportunity saw us make the breakthrough. Nici Seiwald sent a corner into the box, where Oumar Solet beat Wüthrich and headed powerfully into the crossbar. Thankfully Max Wöber was placed perfectly to pounce on the rebound and turned the ball over the line (55')! The celebrations could start at our perfect response to our humbling in Munich, but they were dashed minutes later as a penalty was awarded after the ball bounced into midfield dynamo Seiwald's hand. A VAR check showed it was not a spot kick after all, however, much to our relief.

Our boys then went looking to land the killer blow. Adeyemi had a lovely effort, before Bernede went close from long range and Okafor threatened on his comeback from injury. Substitute Benji Sesko went agonisingly close, as his shot from close range rattled the woodwork. Christian Ilzer's men continued to go on the attack as they looked to avert defeat. Hojlund troubled Philipp Köhn but our goalkeeper reacted sharply before a late penalty call made us all fret! Ulmer was penalised for the ball hitting his arm but once again the referee had to consult VAR and once more we were relieved as the penalty was overturned! We therefore completed a fine start to the championship group despite some jittery moments.
