Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned Nedbank Cup champions after beating Ajax Cape Town 4-3 on penalties at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Teko Modise had a shot goal a minute into the game, but it was easily dealt with by Anssi Jaakkola. The Urban Warriors nearly broke the deadlock as early as the fifth minute, when Tashreeq Morris played in Nathan Paulse, who fired a low effort just wide of the upright. It took a while for Pitso Mosimane's side to create another opening but they went close in the 19th minute when Bongani Zungu headed just wide of the post from six-yards out.

Sundowns certainly saw more of the ball as the half went on, as the likes of Teko Modise and Khama Billiat looked lively in the final third. The Brazilians went close again in the 26th minute from a dead-ball situation but Hlompho Kekana's curling free-kick sailed inches over the crossbar. Ajax, meanwhile, were quite content to sit back and attack Sundowns on the counter, especially as the likes of Bantu Mzwakali and Riyaad Norodien were causing a bit of trouble down the flanks. Sundowns came close to opening the scoring five minutes after the halftime break but Anssi Jaakola was on had to keep out Billiat's stinging effort.

The Brazilians continued to dominate as the second stanza went on and should have taken the lead in the 78th minute but Billiat headed over from six-yards out, after some good work by Anthony Laffor down the right flank. Neither side could break the deadlock in the closing stages, despite Sundowns throwing everything forward, and the game moved onto extra-time.
Sundowns could have went ahead in the 107th minute but Billiat blasted over from inside the area. It remained goalless after a 120 minutes, which took the game to penalties and it was Sundowns who held their nerve to triumph 4-3 in the shootout. In the penalty shoot out, Sundowns saw Kekana shoot over, and Cuthbert Malajila's effort was saved by Jaakkola, while Nkoana, Mobara and Cale missed for Ajax.
