Defensor Sporting edged Penarol 2-1 in the first leg of the Uruguayan title decider in-front of almost 40,000 fans at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo... Defensor, who have grown in status in recent years, went ahead in the 8th minute with a well taken goal from Andres Lamas.
Los Violetas continued at the attack and in the 21st minute they managed to double their lead through Pablo Gaglianone, who converted a penalty kick. However, two minutes before half-time Penarol pulled a goal back through Matias Aguirregaray, after he beat Martin Silva with a well placed effort inside of the area. In the second period Penarol pushed for an equalizer, but they lacked authority when moving forward, and it was Defensor who came closest to extending their advantage. But Penarol goalkeeper Nicolas Biglianti kept his side in the game with a number of impressive saves. Antonio Pacheco reduced Penarol to ten men in the 90th minute, and will be suspended for the second leg of the final, that will be played at the Centenario stadium on Wednesday afternoon. With just a draw from the match Defensor Sporting will be crowned Uruguayan champions.
