In a tightly contested affair in west London, Brentford were able to snatch all three points against Aston Villa thanks to an 83rd-minute winner from Mads Roerslev with his first league goal for the club. Danny Ings had opened the scoring for Villa but it was cancelled out by a superb curling effort from Yoane Wissa before half-time. In a second period in which chances were few and far between, it was the Bees who got the lucky break when Roerslev's first shot was parried straight back to him to power home and send the Brentford Community Stadium wild. The result sees Brentford climb above Villa in the Premier League table, with the Bees now 12th and Steven Gerrard's side in 13th.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank made two changes to the side which was defeated by Manchester City here on Wednesday, one of them enforced as Dominic Thompson dropped to the bench having limped off in midweek, his place taken by Sergi Canos. Christian Norgaard also returned to the starting line-up in favour of Shandon Baptiste after serving his one-game suspension. Meanwhile, there were three changes to the Villa team which lost to Chelsea last time out, with manager Gerrard reverting to a 4-3-3. Tyrone Mings missed out through suspension so Kortney Hause stepped into defence, with John McGinn returning to captain the side while Bertrand Traore replaced Ollie Watkins in attack.
