The Buccaneers dominated the early exchanges and controlled the possession stakes.
Pirates came close to opening the scoring in the fourth minute when Ayanda Gcaba met a Kermit Erasmus corner-kick, but his six-yard header struck the side netting. The Buccaneers continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded with the opening goal in the 14th minute. A swift counter-attack saw Erasmus through on goal and he proceeded to superbly chip the onrushing Kennedy Mweene from roughly 20-yards out, 1-0. Sundowns tried to find their way back into the match and came close in the 27th minute when a thunderous 35-yard shot from Hlompho Kekana rattled the crossbar.

A minute later the play was at the other end of the park as Daine Klate drove a low cross into the box which was also turned onto the woodwork from six-yards out by Oupa Manyisa. In the 29th minute the frame of the goal was struck for the third time when Surprise Moriri controlled the ball on his chest before firing his 16-yard volley against the crossbar. The action continued to flow from end to end in what was an exciting first half, but neither side could find another goal before half time. The start of the second half saw Sundowns will all the possession, but they struggled to break down a resolute Buccaneers defence. Instead, the goal came at the other end, against the run of play, as Erasmus found his second in very similar fashion to the first, after breaking the off-side trap and then chipping the goalkeeper from 24-yards out, 2-0. Pirates made certain of all three points in the 75th minute when they found their third goal, again on the counter attack, as Lehlohonolo Majoro produced a clinical finish from just inside the box, 3-0. The match finished in a horrible fashion as Thabo Matlaba was shown a straight red card in the 94th minute from stamping on a player.

Sundowns: Mweene, Langerman, Schut (Nthethe 46’), Mphahlele, Booysens, Modise, Kekana, Niang (Malajila 57’), Pelembe, Zungu (Mahachi 46’), Moriri.
Pirates: Meyiwa, Gcaba, Matlaba, Jele, Sangweni, Sarr, Ntshumayelo, Klate (Klate 66’), Manyisa, Myeni (Nyauza 85’), Erasmus (Majoro 67’).
