Thierry Henry smashed a hat-trick as Arsenal beat Wigan 4-2 on Sunday to qualify for next season's Champions League. The France striker was inspired at the club's final game at Highbury, hauling his side back from 2-1 down to finish fourth and pip Spurs But while Highbury's distinguished history ended on an appropriate note, Spurs will feel aggrieved they were forced to play their game at Upton Park after seven of their first-team squad were struck down by food poisoning prior to the game. Premiership officials rushed to the team's London hotel to assess the scale of the outbreak before ordering the game go ahead at the eleventh hour. Spurs boss Martin Jol will feel - perhaps rightly - that his club have been cheated out of a place in Europe's elite competition.

But Premiership officials will be relieved the nightmare prospect of Arsenal finishing fifth but then depriving their bitter rivals of a place by winning this season's Champions League has been removed by the Gunners' emphatic display. Going into their final clash needing a victory to have any chance of finishing fourth, Arsenal got off to the perfect start in just the eighth minute, Robert Pires slotting home from close range to put the hosts ahead. But Wigan grabbed a shock equaliser just two minutes later, Paul Scharner taking advantage of some sloppy Arsenal defending to bring Paul Jewell's side level.
