Gianluca Vialli was sacked as Chelsea manager in early September 2000 after just one victory in their opening five league games was coupled by suggestions he had lost the dressing room. Vialli’s successor Claudio Ranieri assumed the reigns six days later and was handed the unenviable task of rectifying a demoralising run of results, starting at Old Trafford. Despite both sides harbouring title hopes at the start of the campaign, it was Manchester United who were justifying their ambition at the top of the pile ahead of their encounter with 17th-placed Chelsea.

But the visitors sparked hopes of a Ranieri revival when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink picked out the top corner to upset the form book and hand his side an eighth-minute lead, triggering a frenzied affair. After a slow start, the table-toppers raced back into proceedings as Paul Scholes, Teddy Sheringham and David Beckham each registered before Raimond van der Gouw made a meal of Tore Andre Flo’s weak header to leave the score nicely poised at 3-2 going into the break. And it was Flo who concluded a telling second-half sequence when he ensured the spoils would be shared after Graeme Le Saux’s desperate goal-line block had prevented Andy Cole from putting the visitors out of sight.

Manchester United followed up their 6-0 demolition of Bradford in mid-week with a victory over struggling Sunderland, thanks to an impressive double from Paul Scholes.
The Black Cats continue to disappoint this season but they battled hard, and United will be thankful they were able to capitalise on one of their chances after dominating the initial proceedings.
